I stared at the door. “That Force is sure getting himself some big ideas. I’m worried that if I don’t watch him close, he’s going to try to earn his stripes with me.”

Kiki put her hands over her face. “We’re supposed to get ready for a party?”

“Dragon likes you, though, Ki,” I said. “And that’s good news. You earning his favor could keep you from getting hurt.”

She gripped her bandaged wrist. “Mish, it is so not good news that Hellboy wants to take me to the prom.”

“Yeah, but hopefully D isn’t lying, and the Burner’ll get paid, and we’ll be out of here soon. But what’s even better for us is, if Samson really sprung from Chino, he’ll radar right down here. No stopping him. If somebody gets in King’s way, he’ll run that sucker down.”

She tweaked out a melancholy grin. “He sounds like you.”

I tilted my head at her. “Nah, what?”

“That’s how you are when you race. Or remember last year when you crushed your competition like bugs in the America’s Sweetheart poetry contest and Mandy Adams threw up on the stage from the stress—”

“Hey, King’s not anything like me. Him and me—that is, he and I, we’re totally different. We’re apples and . . . grenades, you know?”

“Okay. Yeah.” She laughed a little.

“Oranges and Uzis, girl.” I cleared my throat; my voice had gone shredded. “Okay? You get that?”

It didn’t even seem like she heard me as she looked around the room, shaking her head. “Did they kidnap us only yesterday? It seems like longer.”

“Yeah. Just, give me a hug, okay?”

She put her hands on my shoulders but stopped. “You’re covered with blood.”

It was true: Book’s gore stained my arms, my shirt.

I stammered, “O-oh, I’m a mess. Thank God Frank’s not here, Ki. He’d have to get himself a lifetime of shrinkage if he saw me looking like this!”

“Mish, oh, are you crying?”

“Nah . . . it’s just dusty up here.”

She pushed back the hair from my face and took a long look at me. “Hey, I know Frank would be really proud to see how you sewed up that guy.”

“You think so?”

“Yeah.” She patted my cheek. “Though he’d probably be less stoked to see how getting pistol-whipped has completely screwed up your pH balance. You need a facial, stat.”

I laughed and cried at the same time. “Oh, now you’re making jokes, Miss Brave-and-Zesty?”

“Just bad ones. But it’s a start. I’m beginning to get the feeling that I’m going to have to get a little tougher to get through this. So let’s just get you cleaned up. Me too. We’ll feel better. How does that sound?”

“Like a good idea.”

She looked at the hoochie-mama dresses again, and the expensive makeup case. Then she peeped at all the Beverly Hills rags and shiny woman stuff sparkling around us. Even in her scaredness, a little fashion madness glittered in her eye.

“And what do you say, maybe we can find some decent clothes in here?”
